Summary

The City of Victoria and Becoming developed an accessible, CSA-compliant signage system for hybrid workspaces across three buildings—using color, braille, tactile lettering and pictograms to support inclusive navigation.

Context

The City of Victoria partnered with Becoming to create a wayfinding and signage strategy to respond to the Modern Workspace initiative for hybrid employees. The scope included developing a comprehensive and accessible signage and wayfinding system for employees to navigate shared work zones and meeting rooms across all three city buildings (City Hall, Centennial and Pandora).

Solution

Becoming created a comprehensive and accessible signage system, organized by colour and using a limited pictogram system to identify a variety of shared workspaces and to aid in circulation throughout the three buildings.

Which fundamentals of accessible design were considered?

The project uses communication devices designed to provide access to a wide range of abilities, including tactile lettering, braille, pictograms and colour. The design is compliant with CSA accessibility standards for the built environment and Rick Hansen Foundation requirements for accessibility.
